UFC 79 Nemesis – Chuck Liddell Versus Wanderlei Silva
Chuck Liddell, a fierce striker with a greco roman wrestling background, will face the most feared fighter in MMA, Wanderlei ‘The Axe Murderer’ Silva. ‘UFC 79 Nemesis‘ gives us the fight matchup we have ALL been waiting for.
Wanderlei is a black-belt in Brazillian Jui-Jitsu and absolutely loves using his knees to finish an opponent, but will likely not get close enough to Liddell to use that technique. Look for Chuck to keep Wanderlei at arms length looking for the knockout puch. Wanderlei’s best bet is to come in fast and furious, pounding Chuck’s legs a la Jardine to soften Chuck up for quick inside moves.
Chuck ‘ The Iceman Liddell’ says:
I think our styles will make for a great fight and I always thought I could knock him out. I like a guy who comes at me and forces the fight. I don’t think this one goes to a decision, that’s for sure. It might make it into the second or third round, but someone is going out sooner or later. I plan on sending him out in the first round.
Wanderlei Silva has been quoted as saying:
He’s a very tough guy. He’s the biggest name here and it’s a very important fight for me. I’m training very hard because this will be a very tough fight for me.

My thoughts: Wanderlei is going to crush Liddell. Hey might not knee him like you say above, but it will be a knockout not a decision. He knows that this is an important fight, he is younger and stronger than Chuck. Chuck’s only chance is a lucky punch IMO.

I think Liddell is going to catch Silva. He is used to people coming in ‘fast and furious’, so will be ready for that offensive. He has height and arm length that will help him beat Wanderlei. His takedown defense is among the best out there, so I don’t see a choke out at all. I can’t see Wanderlei getting close enough to use any of his ‘patented moves’.

Seriously???
Wanderlei is soooooo much tougher than Chuck! I don’t think Chuck has a chance in heck of pulling this off. Silva is training for the fight of his life and there is no way in hell he will let someone who has basically 1 weapon beat him.
He has such a huge following all over because he is SO dominant. Look for him to just demolish Chuck one way or another. They don’t call him the ‘Axe Murderer’ for no reason. Damn, just look at the guy!

Let’s get realistic about this.. Chuck has fought a LOT of intense fighters in his long history of knockouts. He has long enough arms to easily be able to stay back far enough from Wanderlei. The height/reach is a big advantage in this one, IMO.
Like is said above, Wanderlei’s big chance is to leg kick Chuck like Jardine did. THAT might get him a win. So, there is a chance… But I would think Chuck is looking for that.
This win goes to Liddell. There will be a rematch, though, if that happens.
