Fight Analysis: Is this the rematch of the century? Probably not This is an aging Matt Hughes, who hasn’t looked particularly effective, against BJ Penn who is still looking like a quality fighter. BJ Penn has way more skills than Hughes and his takedown defense is probably the best in the UFC due to his incredible flexibility. The only type of fighter that can take BJ Penn out is a more active one, such as Edgar. I see this fight ending with a TKO by Penn. Why? Penn’s standup is superb and Hughes will NOT take him down.

Fight Analysis: Frankie Edgar is a machine… a cardio machine and an attack machine. But BJ is the prodigy. He didn’t get that name by chance, but is just a natural fighter. He is stronger than Edgar and he is more talented than Edgar. He is just not as fast and can tire out. What will happen on this second fight? BJ will be mad. He will be more conditioned and will take this fight to Edgar like he has never seen. BJ will get him to the ground in this matchup and use his excellent flexibility and BJJ skills to end the fight.

Our second pick for UFC 84 is the BJ Penn, Sean Sherk matchup. BJ Penn, the jui-jitsu master with flexibility that defies logic is a tough fighter with a very methodical approach, is set up to face Sean Sherk, a fighter with amazing cardio and better ground and pound than any other fighter in the division (IMO).

BJ Penn is the gold standard of what jui-jitsu represents in the UFC. He is masterful from his back and has the ability to contort his body (especially legs) into unique positions for a quick submission. But that is not where it ends for Penn, who has amazing hands and knock-out power.

Sean Sherk is a bulldog with an aggressive style and unbelievable stamina/cardio. He has a wrestling background and loves to ground and pound. In fact, some say he may be the best ground and pounder in UFC history in the lightweight division. He has a lot of strength, excellent takedowns, and has never been submitted in his lengthy career.

FIGHT ANALYSIS: BJ Penn and Sean Sherk have had LOTS of smack talk and much bad blood as of late. In Penn’s last fight (at the very end) he shouted ‘Sean Sherk, you’re dead!’. Sean, of course, did not take those words lightly and has been training with ferocity ever since. The fight – BJ is going to look to keep the fight standing where his superior boxing skills and reach advantage give him a serious edge. While BJ has some amazing takedown defense, Sherk is just way to dominant in that respect and WILL get him to the ground. When that happens, look for BJ to attempt several submissions from the bottom and Sherk to find a way into the guard for some brutal ground and pound action. Who wins this battle? I think that this round will go several rounds with BJ on his back, but possibly winning out the round with punches prior to takedown. However, I think that eventually Sherk will muscle through when BJ tires and…. In the end… SHERK BY TKO.

On to the next UFC Event! We certainly have to put that last one behind us as we bet on both Matt Hughes to upset GSP as well as Sokoudjou to defeat Machida. Of course, neither happened, so our outcome was not as favorable as we hoped. 50/50 is ok and wasn’t a loss, but we certainly like to do better.

Anyway! UFC 80 is on the horizon and the Main Event is certainly an interesting event with BJ Penn going up against Joe Stevenson. BJ is not necessarily a sure-shot to win this one… I would not count Joe ‘Daddy’ out just yet. He did beat Guillard, right?
