Wanderlei Silva Versus Keith Jardine – UFC 84

Our third pick for UFC 84 is the Keith Jardine, Wanderlei Silva matchup. This fight screams thriller with two guys who just love to pound the shit out of their opponents. Wanderlei is coming off a loss with Chuck Liddell and Keith Jardine recently beat Liddell, but this fight is still going to be a barn burner!

Wanderlei Silva Versus Keith Jardine

Wanderlei Silva is the Pride of Pride fighting and one bad-ass fighter.  He is a brawler with amazing skills and an intensity which drove the name ‘The Axe Murderer’.  He has heavy hands and is a black belt in jiu-jitsu under the famed Carlinhos Gracie.

Keith Jardine is a former Ultimate Fighter Season 2 fighter.  He has brutal leg kicks and loves to stand against his opponents and drive kicks into their body while waiting for the knockout punch.

FIGHT ANALYSIS: Both fighters are intense.  Jardine kicks hard to the body and will look to stay on the outside of Silva’s reach much like he did in the later rounds against Liddell.  Wanderlei Silva can take the fight to the ground, but loves to get in close and use a Thai clinch to drag even his biggest opponents down.  Look for Silva to get inside Jardine’s outer range and begin throwing hard punches while readying for his massive knees.   While Jardine WILL try to keep Wanderlei on the outside, it will not stay that way.  Silva is too aggressive for this tactic.  Silva is going to get inside and come out with one of the most brutal knockouts in recent history…. In the end… SILVA BY TKO.

B.J. Penn Versus Sean Sherk – UFC 84

Our second pick for UFC 84 is the BJ Penn, Sean Sherk matchup. BJ Penn, the jui-jitsu master with flexibility that defies logic is a tough fighter with a very methodical approach, is set up to face Sean Sherk, a fighter with amazing cardio and better ground and pound than any other fighter in the division (IMO).

Don’t forget to check out all the UFC 84 Betting Lines.

BJ Penn Versus Sean Sherk

BJ Penn is the gold standard of what jui-jitsu represents in the UFC. He is masterful from his back and has the ability to contort his body (especially legs) into unique positions for a quick submission. But that is not where it ends for Penn, who has amazing hands and knock-out power.

Sean Sherk is a bulldog with an aggressive style and unbelievable stamina/cardio. He has a wrestling background and loves to ground and pound. In fact, some say he may be the best ground and pounder in UFC history in the lightweight division. He has a lot of strength, excellent takedowns, and has never been submitted in his lengthy career.

FIGHT ANALYSIS: BJ Penn and Sean Sherk have had LOTS of smack talk and much bad blood as of late. In Penn’s last fight (at the very end) he shouted ‘Sean Sherk, you’re dead!’. Sean, of course, did not take those words lightly and has been training with ferocity ever since. The fight – BJ is going to look to keep the fight standing where his superior boxing skills and reach advantage give him a serious edge. While BJ has some amazing takedown defense, Sherk is just way to dominant in that respect and WILL get him to the ground. When that happens, look for BJ to attempt several submissions from the bottom and Sherk to find a way into the guard for some brutal ground and pound action. Who wins this battle? I think that this round will go several rounds with BJ on his back, but possibly winning out the round with punches prior to takedown. However, I think that eventually Sherk will muscle through when BJ tires and…. In the end… SHERK BY TKO.

Tito Ortiz Versus Lyoto Machida

Category: UFC 84 Ill Will — Tags: , , , ,
May 13, 2008 - 3:36 pm

Our very first pick for UFC 84 is the Tito Ortiz, Lyoto Machida fight. Tito, the bad boy who burst on the scene with ground and pound like few before him is to face Lyoto Machida, a fighter with tons of heart and skill to match.

Don’t forget to check out all the UFC 84 Betting Lines.

Tito Ortiz Versus Lyoto Machida

Tito Ortiz is where ‘Ground and Pound’ began. When he came onto the scene about 6 years ago, he was a machine. He was defeating names like Evan Tanner, Wanderlei Silva, and many other greats. His cardio was supreme and he seemed never to tire. His defense was awesome and once he got a fighter to the ground, the fight was soon over.

Lyoto Machida is undefeated. He has taken on and beat big names like Rich Franklin, Stephan Bonnar, BJ Penn, and Rameau Sokoudjo with an array of methods (TKO, TKO, Decision, Submission, respectively). Machida has excellent, strong striking with both his hands and feet and can round that out with solid jiu-jitsu.

FIGHT ANALYSIS: Tito Ortiz has lost 3 of his last few fights and leaves many UFC fans a bit underwhelmed. However, he lost only to quality fighters such as Chuck Liddell (2 times) and Randy Couture (once). Machida has dominated fights many expected him to lose and has become a fighter that many love to watch. He has a lot of heart and a wide skillset. This fight will see Machida taking an active role in striking and Tito looking to find a way in to take down the undefeated Machida. Machida, though, will squash those attempts by Tito and get him continuously back on his feet. Machida has good takedown defense and better than average jui-jitsu, look for him to use his defense to keep the fight standing where Tito will eventually lose. In the end… MACHIDA BY TKO.
