BJ Penn has excellent stand-up skills matching up well with his unbelievable Jui-Jitsu - powered by his unique flexibility. Joe Stevenson has great submissions and takedown skills and has even shown some power in his stand up game against Melvin Guillard.
This match looks quite interesting on paper. The two fighters match up well in styles as well as in ‘hunger’ for the victory. I don’t believe that BJ will ’stick his neck out’ for Stevenson to take advantage of, I think BJ has amazing take down skills, and he has the better stand up game. This fight could go many different ways, but in the end: BJ PENN by TKO.

Gabriel Gonzaga is pure power. He has awesome striking skills with both kicks and punching power, he is a Brazillian Jui-Jitsu black belt, and practices Muay Thai in his regular daily training. Fabricio Werdum, who once defeated Gonzaga several years ago in Brazil, has an excellent ground game (being very well accomplished in Jui-Jitsu and Judo), and has a distinct height/reach advantage.
This matchup looks quite different ‘on paper’. Gonzaga was beaten by Werdum pre-UFC, Werdum has a big height and reach advantage, and Gonzaga just lost to Couture… What does this mean? Gonzaga is HUNGRY for the win. He has definitely changed a lot since the original fight between the two. While Werdum could still submit Gonzaga, that threat is much less than it previously was and Werdum CANNOT stand up with Gonzaga which is where this fight will end. Prediction: GONZAGA EARLY by TKO.

Jess Liaudin is a very unique fighter with a blend of kickboxing, jui-jitsu, Muay Thai, and shootboxing. He is a well-rounded fighter with some explosiveness. Marcus Davis is a hard-hitting fighter with boxing and karate skills along with a quickness that keeps oponents guessing.
These two fighters are looking for a battle. Their styles do match up very well with both having a certain quickness. Marcus Davis is the much stronger fighter, while Liaudin has a few more tools in his arsenal. This is quite a tough fight to predict and even though the majority believe that Marcus Davis will take the fight.. We think: LIAUDIN BY DECISION.

Jorge Rivera is a well-rounded fighter who will win by whatever method it takes. He trains cardio, wrestling, stand up daily and has a good blend of skills. Kendall Grove is a very tall fighter at 6′6″ and loves to stand up and trade blows, but has better BJJ skills than given credit for which are only aided by his height.
This may be a more interesting fight than people think. Kendall is a bit rash in his fighting style and could stand up longer than he should against a seasoned stand-up fighter. If Grove doesn’t let his aggressive spirit overrule his good sense, he will win the fight. After quite a bit of recent training and a will to win coming off a loss to Cote, I see the outcome as: GROVE BY SUBMISSION.

Jason Lambert is a strong fighter with some excellent ground and pound skills. He has both wrestling and Jui Jitsu skills and loves beating up his opponents ont he ground. Wilson Gouveia, on the other hand, is a fierce striker with good Jui Jitsu skills. He has some height advantage and while he may not be as strong as Lambert - his heavy hands might help him out and his good Jui Jitsu might be a factor as well.
This is a very tough fight to call. If Lambert gets Gouveia on the ground, it’s a tough call as Gouveia really has good Jui Jitsu skills. My thoughts are that Gouveia has fixed any cardio issues he may have had earlier, so I feel both will be in the same shape throughout the fight. Gouveia is quicker than Lambert, but Lambert is looking to push the pace on this fight. I don’t believe Gouveia is strong enough to force Lambert to the ground, so Lambert will be on top and, therefore: LAMBERT BY DECISION.
Those are ALL the UFC 80 fights we are going to bet on, so therefore are the only UFC 80 Picks we have
Good luck betting and we hope that we have given you something to think about!

I agree! Those 2 fights are easy to predict IMO. Especially Gonzaga who will win in the 1st round by knock out. BJ Penn is going to finish Stevenson too. Stevenson is strong, but no match for BJ Penn’s stand up OR JJ.

Girls opinion here!
BJ Penn will win for sure against Joe Stevenson
Why? He has a better stand up fighting game and better jui jitsu! He is awesome!
Gabriel Gonzaga is going to waste Fabricio Werdum, no doubt in my mind. Even though he lost to Couture, he has been on a tear and is ready to move past that fight. This will be his comeback and will get people talking about him again!
As far as Marcus Davis and Jess Liaudin - that is hard for me to predict, lol. Marcus has some heavy hands, for sure, but Jess Liauden is an overall fighter. If Marcus Davis doesn’t ‘catch’ Jess with a good round of punches, Jess will take it all the way and win by decision. So, it could be either Marcus Davis by TKO or Jess Liaudin by decision.
Thanks for hearing a girls perspective, lol.
Been watching the UFC for a long time
Not sure if I will do any betting, since I haven’t tried that before, but I will be watching the fights for sure.

gonzaga is probably top ten …
- he destroyed CC, and I feel would only lose to Couture like that 3/10x
… the loss to Couture might have played out differently another night.
still,
i don’t think he has shown super elite fast striking ever :
yes he KO’d crocop - but only AFTER the elbows,
and got outstruck even BEFORE the dirty boxing clinch which in the couture loss.
Werdum didn’t know what to do against unusually large Sylvia, but he outstruck Gonzaga in the previous fight and neutralized him in other areas in what I remember of their first fight.
I don’t see evidence to favor Gonzaga - if it wasn’t for the crocop fight i’d heavily favor Werdum.
60/40 for Werdum i’d wager:
3rd round KO, or decision Werdum actually
pgamil (January 16, 2008 @ 5:58 pm)
pardon my ignorance - he never fought sylvia (was monson).
actually Werdum is like 6′4″ same as Gonzaga a bit lighter only i think.
still based on the first fight being only 3 1/2 years ago i pick WERDUM.
Too bad Gonzaga can’t fight Kongo. I think Kongo although awesome would get owned by Napao

Hey guys - Good predictions. Great analysis as well. Werdum DOES have the height advantage here at 6′4″ to 6′1″. I think that 3 1/2 years (the amount of time that passed since the last Gonzaga vs Werdum fight) is a lifetime in this sport. That is enough time to become a black-belt in another discipline. I believe they are different fighters today than the last time they met.
Even so… I think you have valid points on Gonzaga vs. Werdum and I can easily see a scenario where Werdum submits Gonzaga. If it goes beyond the 1st round, that is exactly my thoughts on the fight - Werdum by decision.
Good thoughts everyone!

Yep, Werdum beats Gonzaga. I know that isn’t popular, but true.
Gouveia beats Lambert too. Thats my other non-populer vote.
Else I agree with Bj Penn win and Kendall Grove win.
Also, Marcus Davis KO’s Liaudin.

Here we go!
Not too long and we will see just how good my picks are. I bet on:
BJ Penn, Gabriel Gonzaga, Marcus Davis, Kendall Grove, and Wilson Gouveia.
Not much of a surprise there to most people on my picks as they pretty much follow the lines so far. But different from the admin’s picks from this site.
Hope I wins some cash!
whatever (January 19, 2008 @ 1:07 pm)
Stevenson is going to beat BJ Penn. What do you think of that? Werdum is beating Gonzaga also. Davis will crush Liaudin, Grove submits Jorge, and Lambert kicks Gouveia’s ass.
That’s what I am going to bet on… Let’s see who makes some money.
