Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields – UFC 129 Predictions

April 21, 2011 - 7:01 pm

Georges St-Pierre vs Jake Shields

Fight Analysis: The main event is definitely the fight of the night. This is one fight that has been getting a ton of press and a lot of advertising from the UFC and for good reason. While GSP has faced a number of quality contenders, this matchup is the most dangerous for him. Jake Shields has deadly BJJ, but GSP is much better standing. What matters in this fight – can Shields get GSP to the ground? And if so, can he do better than previous BJJ opponents like BJ Penn have done?

The difference between opponents like BJ Penn and Jake Shields are that Shields is also an excellent wrestler. While GSP has become an excellent wrestler himself, the combination of Wrestling and BJJ could open GSP to a submission. Because of that, I think GSP will keep this fight standing. His takedown defense is phenomenal and his kick-boxing is a definite strength. I see GSP punishing Jake from afar with kicks and superman punches. He will never tire out Shields, but will definitely make him look *slightly better* like Koshcheck.

Prediction: GSP by Decision

Jose Aldo vs Mark Hominick – UFC 129 Prediction

Jose Aldo vs Mark Hominick

Fight Analysis: Depsite what some think… and despite the fact that Hominick does have some ground game.. this fight will be a stand-up battle only. Hominick has excellent striking and utilizes a multi-striking (body, head) approach to the game. He is going to use that to try to upset Aldo. However, Aldo is much faster and (I think) a bit stronger than Hominick. Despite Hominick playing for a hometown crowd, Aldo is going to finish this fight… and early.

Prediction: Aldo by TKO

Vladimir Matyushenko vs Jason Brilz – UFC 129 Prediction

Vladimir Matyushenko vs Jason Brilz

Fight Analysis: Matyushenko is a notoriously heavy-handed fighter coming off a huge win and Brilz, while a tough-ass fighter, is coming off a loss and hasn’t quite looked up to peak. This is a ‘keep the fight standing’ for Vladimir and if he is able to follow that gameplan, he wins this by knockout easy. I see this fight ending via heavy-hands.

Prediction: Matyushenko by TKO

Randy Couture vs Llyoto Machida – UFC 129 Prediction

Randy Couture vs Llyoto Machida

Fight Analysis: I’ll be the first to say that Couture is an amazing fighter. He is a Greco-Roman wrestler with excellent grappling and decent hands. Machida is a karate expert, which completely throws off the game plan of anyone he has faced (well, except maybe for shogun). Machida is elusive, which does not play into Couture’s grappling expertise, but one thing Couture is known for is imposing his grappling style on his opponents. This time, however, he is just not fast enough to face Machida and come out with a grappling victory. Machida will simply land more stikes to win this fight. Couture will be a tough opponent, always is, but Machida is too elusive.

Prediction: Machida By Decision

Nate Diaz vs Rory MacDonald – UFC 129 Prediction

Nate Diaz vs Rory MacDonald

Fight Analysis: This is another great matchup. Both fighters are tough as nails and both NEED this win big time. I think that MacDonald will have learned bigtime from the Condit fight and use that to keep himself in the game with Diaz. The beginnings of this fight will be all standup and it will end up with a lot of ground game where (even though Diaz is good on his back) MacDonald will edge it out in the eyes of the judges.

Prediction: MacDonald By Decision

Mark Bocek vs Ben Henderson – UFC 129 Prediction

Mark Bocek vs Ben Henderson

Fight Analysis: This is a great stylistic matchup, but may not lead to the most exciting fight on the card :) Both fighters are excellent on the ground, which is where I think this fight will live for a VERY long time. It is going to be incredibly tough for either of these guys to submit the other. I see this as the one with the most damage to their opponent will take the decision. With that said…. I’m going to pick Henderson to edge out the decision. Henderson is the former WEC champ and I think his strength and heart will help him take this VERY CLOSE fight.

Prediction: Henderson By Decision

Georges St Pierre vs Josh Koscheck – UFC 124 Predictions

Category: UFC 124 — Tags: , ,
December 6, 2010 - 2:57 pm

Georges St Pierre Versus Josh Koscheck

Fight Analysis: This is one of the best fight matchups in a long time, IMO. Georges St. Pierre is the most intelligent and ever-evolving fighter to fight in the UFC (yes, my opinion). He is tactical and uses weaknesses to bolster his game plan. Josh Koscheck, on the other hand, fights with his heart and attacks his opponents mercilessley. Josh, from what we saw in the Ultimate Fighter Season 12, seems more of a fighter with emotion and not a whole lot of brainpower involved. So, what will happen? Josh truly believes he can roll over on Georges with little effort. He has no fear of him and will move quickly in his direction at the start of the fight. Josh is going to come out swinging and will not likely look for a takedown initially. Georges on the other hand will watch for an opening and use his quickness to take Kos to the ground.

Don’t forget that, in their first fight, GSP took Koscheck to the ground quite easily. GSP’s skills are now 100 times better. He is too quick for Josh and when Josh throws one of his ‘haymakers’, he will go to the ground – where Georges will be able to control him. This, I feel, will be common throughout the fight. Each round will have some standup, but will have GSP throwing some and then taking Josh down. I see this fight as a decision-victory with a unanimous decision going to St Pierre.

Prediction: GSP By Decision

Thiago Alves vs John Howard – UFC 124 Prediction

Category: UFC 124 — Tags: , , ,
December 4, 2010 - 4:02 pm

`Thiago Alves vs John Howard

Fight Analysis: Another awesome battle and quite possibly fight of the night here. Big potential in this one with the massive Alves vs Howard who is also a beast. This is truly a battle of power vs power. 2 Muay Thai fighters with impressive power and strength going head to head. This is a VERY tough fight to predict as a result. Thiago has been in somewhat of a slump, but in his defense, he did fight some big names and lost both by decision. Howard has fought much lesser challengers and had a recent loss on his record as well.

In this fight either could win with a single punch. For betting purposes, I would bet on Howard as the underdog to win this fight. But – I believe the real truth is that Thiago is going to TKO Howard because he will simply be more hungry (can’t lose 3 in a row!)

Prediction: Alves By TKO
